The British Museum
Forty miniature sarcophagus sculptures, each sitting in its own brochure display case, decorated with a concrete madeleine. The sculptures are exhibited one step apart from one another, allowing the viewer to engage in a kind of ritual, circling the space. The work is based on a story repeated as a legend in my family, according to which I ran around ecstatically among the sarcophagi when I visited the British Museum as a child. (Though I myself don't remember the visit, I still have a sarcophagus pencil case from the gift shop).
The madeleines allude to Proust's madeleine cookie, which evokes a childhood memory to the protagonist. The number forty was chosen out of consideration for its significance in Ancient Egyptian culture, where the soul was thought to stay on close to the body for forty days after death.
Space size 70 sq meters, molded concrete, plaster, pigments, acrylics, readymade brochure display cases, 2016
